Excitement building for Shield spectacle

THE build-up to the much-hyped Bexhill Observer Charity Shield contest between Sidley United and Bexhill United on Thursday April 17 is really hotting up.

To add a touch of history to the occasion former players from both sides are being invited to meet and greet the players as they enter the pitch.

Bexhill chairman Dave Harris, who originally spawned the idea of the match, said: "We would like players from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s of both clubs to contact myself or John Huggett. What will happen is they will go on the pitch, stand in a line and the players will run through them and shake hands."

Meanwhile, negotiations with a former Premiership referee are still ongoing but Harris has already announced some lavish pre-match entertainment plans. Tickets are 3.50 for adults and 1.50 for pensioners and children under-16, kick-off is 7.45pm. Any past players wishing to take part should contact Harris or Huggett on (01424) 212099.
