Football a distraction

THE TOLL of World Cup football matches on the concentration of other sportsmen at the time included Worthing's failed run-chase during England's losing quarter-final on Saturday.

The pervasive presence of the television during Worthing's reply to Heath's 243 for five extended beyond the concentration of the waiting batsmen in the pavilion to the pair out in the middle.

The ability of teams playing shorter cricket in the Invitation League to stop and take tea for the duration of England v Portugal minimised the effect Worthing's batsmen, it seemed to skipper David Rogers, could not shake off.
