FOOTBALL: Arundel and Wick share the spoils

AN 81st-minute equaliser from Scott Tipper ensured that Arundel took a share of the spoils in an entertaining 2-2 derby draw at Wick on Tuesday evening.

Top-of-the-table Wick looked set to claim their sixth win of the season but with just nine minutes left, Mullets' livewire substitute Rory Biggs found space on the edge of the box to play in Tipper, who showed an excellent first touch before firing over onrushing substitute keeper Greg Forster.

Wick will feel like it is two points dropped, especially as Scott Murfin and Ben Buckland both crashed efforts against the bar in a frantic second half.

Forster had endured an uncomfortable evening after coming on in the 20th minute for the injured Alex Bryant, and was at fault for Arundel's first goal.

With the game approaching half-time scoreless, Forster released a shocking goal kick which landed straight at the feet of visiting striker Ashley Martin, who bore down on goal, rounded Forster and coolly slotted home.

Wick came out the stronger side in the second period. Lee Barnard shot straight at Ben O'Connor following good work from Murfin and Phil Turner, then moments later George Gaskin's effort hit the side netting.

Wick's equaliser came on 54 minutes when Turner's shot from close-range was deflected onto the bar and Gaskin reacted quickest in the goalmouth melee to force home the rebound.

Wick now upped a gear and Rob Grove and Jason Wimbleton had to be at full stretch to deny the dangerous Murfin opportunities around the box.

They were helpless to stop Wick taking the lead on 76 minutes. Daren Pearce found himself unmarked and headed home Gaskin's cross from the right.

The game, full of committed challenges, boiled over in the 84th minute when Mullets' Wimbleton received a straight red card, apparently for retaliating to an earlier challenge. There was nearly time for Murfin to orchestrate a late winner, but his low shot was clawed away by O'Connor.

WICK: Bryant; Torode, A.Biggs, Sutcliffe, Buckland; Turner, Clayton, Pearce, Barnard; S.Murfin, Gaskin. Subs: Forster (Bryant 20), Lawson (Gaskin 83), Beaney, Moss, N.Murfin.
