FOOTBALL: Shoreham hit lacklustre Arundel for five

ARUNDEL Football Club suffered their second home defeat of the season, 5-2 against Shoreham, on Tuesday evening.

Lacklustre Mullets, missing the injured trio of Howard Neighbour (hamstring), Dave Hall (ankle), and Matt Huckett, (knee ligaments), started slowly and never recovered.

Mullets assistant manager Simon Butler said: "There are no excuses. We were inept. It was our worst performance of the season. The two goals just after half-time killed us. We played as individuals and there was a lack of teamwork."

Shoreham's opening goal midway through the first half highlighted Arundel's shortcomings on the night.

A flowing passing move from their own penalty area ended with Shoreham winger Owen Callaghan beating Mullets' keeper Maciey Kason from 12 yards. On the one hand, good interplay from Shoreham, yes. But on the other, it showed Arundel's inability, both as individuals and as a team, to get close enough to their opponents to stop the move from progressing.

Too often Mullets failed to press Shoreham, and were second to too many loose balls. Just five minutes after Callaghan's strike, Arundel were in deeper trouble. Kevin Keehan, Shoreham's diminutive midfielder, fired an early contender for goal of the season by flashing a 25-yard rocket past Kason.

The shock of losing a second goal seemed, albeit briefly, to awaken Mullets from their collective slumbers. Jason Wimbleton's header halved the deficit, and Arundel searched for an equaliser as half-time approached.

Only seven minutes into the second half though, any hopes of a Mullets revival had been extinguished, as Mussels went 4-1 ahead with strikes from Callaghan and substitute Neil Kane.

Arundel reduced the arrears through Dave Walker's header, but Shoreham maintained their grip on the match. And, eight minutes from time, they got their fifth when Callaghan netted a penalty after Alex Duncan had upended Kane.

ARUNDEL: Kason; L.Walker, Hack, Wimbleton, Axell; Biggs, Grove, Mike Huckett, Hibberd; D.Walker, Norgate. Subs: S.Towers (Norgate 55), Duncan (Grove 58), Boxall (L.Walker 75), Arnell.
