Adams hat-trick puts Rye through

Sam Adams scored his second hat-trick of the season to fire Rye United into the next round of the FA Vase.

The Quarterboys eventually won 3-2 in a tricky first round proper tie at home to Horley Town on Saturday after taking the lead three times.

After Andy Atkin had twice been denied by fine saves and Micky O’Callaghan had headed off the line at the other end, Adams put Rye in front with a 42nd minute penalty awarded for a foul on Anthony Storey.

Horley levelled in added time at the end of the first half, but Rye were dominant at the start of the second period and Adams restored their advantage in the 52nd minute by driving home from inside the box.

The visitors again equalised in the 60th minute via a good low strike from 25 yards only for Adams to clinch it for Rye three minutes later with a thumping free kick from a yard outside the box.

Elsewhere, Sussex County League Division One side Sidley United suffered an incredible 6-4 defeat away to Division Two team Loxwood in round one of the Sussex Senior Cup despite leading 4-1 at half time.

Jason Taylor, Dominic Clarke, Kenny Pogue and an own goal appeared to have put Sidley in complete control, but they capitulated after the break with Damon Aston and Ben Bissett both scoring hat-tricks for Loxwood.

Full reports on both matches will appear in Friday’s Observers.
