Arundel thrown out of RUR Cup

ARUNDEL Football Club’s hopes of Sussex RUR Cup glory this season are over as they have been thrown out of the competition for fielding an ineligible player in their 4-3 win over Seaford last Tuesday.

An administrative error meant Mullets did not realise Alex Biggs had already played in this year’s competition for Worthing United in their 3-2 defeat to Ringmer in October.

Seaford will now take Mullets’ place and will travel to Redhill in the quarter-finals in January.

Arundel’s home league match with East Grinstead on Saturday and away tie at Sidley in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday were both postponed owing to frozen pitches.

Mullets assistant manager Simon Butler has now set his sights on a strong second half of the season and a Sussex Senior Cup run, as they attempt to revive a season that has been ravaged by injury, suspension, and what Butler called a “lack of commitment.”

He said: “It’s not gone as well as we expected, we’ve had a lot of injuries and suspensions as well as a lack of commitment, so we haven’t had a settled side.

“For me, they’re the three main reasons why we’ve been underperforming.

“We’d like a top-six finish, but have to be realistic and just need to play the season out with at least a bit more consistency.

“Scott Tipper has stood out and been our most consistent player, which is pleasing, but it’s been a topsy-turvy season so far. We started well but have slipped back and are just looking for more consistency from now on.”

Arundel host Shoreham in County League Division 1 on Saturday.
