Jay Lovett hailed his in-form Burgess Hill Town team after a 4-1 hammering of Faversham – and said he always had faith they’d start winning after their season’s slow start.

Max Miller (2), Dan Perry and Martyn Box all scored as Hill moved 12th in the league, setting them up for this Saturday’s FA Trophy trip to Hastings United.

Lovett said: “It was a good win and thoroughly deserved. We played well and created many chances. We could have scored a couple more, but I'm not going to be to disappointed with a 4-1 win - the players should be proud of the way they played.

"Everyone played their part. The defence has been solid of late, Dan Perry has been scoring goals and it was nice for Max Miller to get two in front of his new-born daughter. Each player has stood up and been counted, and has enjoyed playing for the club and their teammates.”

Lovett had always sensed Hill’s league form would pick up after a winless start. "League form has been much better lately, but it's no shock to me that this group are playing the way they are,” he said.

"It’s just a shame we took a little longer to get going than we should have. Cup games have helped increase confidence, with some good wins against good sides, and teams in leagues higher than us.

"It's still very early to get carried away with anything or make any predictions - we are just looking to continue to climb the league and get ourselves in the most respectable position we can.

"The league is wide open and many teams seem to be able to beat each other – and you can really elevate your position with a couple of wins or drop a few places without them.

Lovett is looking forward to visiting Gary Elphick’s Hastings United and said: “Many people at Burgess Hill know their manager, and we’ve played as players against each other. Hastings have hit a great bit of form and kept many clean sheets, but are also scoring goals.

“Cup games give any underdog team a fighting chance, but we will go into the game doing what we do, and seeing how we can challenge ourselves against a good side.”

While it was a weekend to savour for BHTFC, it was one to forget for Haywards Heath Town – they lost 5-0 in the league at Cray Valley Paper Mills and had keeper Billy Collings sent off.
