Double boost at The Parish Field

The Sussex County Football League Division Two outfit has brought in former Hastings United defender Nathan Russell and retained Gordon Cuddington.

Both featured in the club’s flagship friendly against Hastings United last weekend with striker Cuddington playing the full 90 minutes and half time substitute Russell slotting in to the defence.

The powerful Russell, who began last season with Sussex Division One club Rye United, trained with Westfield for the first time last Thursday night and put pen to paper after the session.

Westfield joint manager Tony Harris said: “I think he can be a very good addition to us defensively, but he’s also got the presence and experience to be able to play centre-midfield. His attitude has been bang on.”

Cuddington won Westfield’s managers’ player, players’ player and supporters’ player of the year accolades in 2011/12, and has chosen to stay despite interest from elsewhere.

“There’s been a lot of interest in him so we’re made up that he’s decided to stay,” continued Harris. “With him and Pughy (David Pugh), we’ve got a lot of options up-front.”

Cuddington and Sam Antonen are away for the friendly at home to Eastbourne Borough reserves on Saturday, although Roberto Martelini is back from holiday.
