EP’s faint title hopes ended

EAST Preston Football Club’s outside County League Division 1 title challenge was ended on Tuesday night with Peacehaven all but confirming the crown.

Peacehavan’s 2-0 victory over Shoreham means they now need just one point from their final two league games, although second-place Redhill would have to turn around a huge goal difference if the league leaders fail to pick up the point they need.

Third-placed EP’s 1-1 home draw against Selsey now means, mathematically, they can no longer catch the front runners although it was previously a big ask to do so.

EP manager Dominic Di Paola said: “I think it has been over for three weeks now, what with all these games we have had one after the other.

“It’s won and congratulations to them, the best team always wins it and the table does not lie at the end of the season.

“Without a doubt if we hadn’t had all these games I think we’d still be challenging, but we have fallen short and that’s not just through fatigue, it has come through not winning games and not being good enough.

“On Tuesday night we had enough chances to win three games and didn’t take them.

“It’s the story of our season, we have not got someone to score goals and we can’t keep relying on Joe Shelley – he is not a machine.”

Craig Grantham scuffed wide twice and Dan Simmonds miscued his shot over the bar as the first half ended with the scoreline still at 0-0.

It was a moment of quality that saw Selsey take the lead midway through the second-half as Matt Wood chested the ball and sent a dipping, 40-yard volley over Jack Fagen.

Three minutes later, however, and EP were level as Shelley hooked in a leveller.
