Fine win puts Rye fifth

The Quarterboys knocked their opponents out of the running for the runners-up spot in Division One of the Sussex County Football League and nudged themselves into the top five.

Manager Scott Price said: “It could and should have been a lot more really. They started quite well, but after we got the first goal we completely dominated.”

Duncan McArthur put Rye ahead after around 25 minutes with a free kick. Rye’s second goal came right on half time when Liam Upton delivered a lovely cross for Scott Ramsay to head home at the far post.

Grinstead pulled one back before Sam Cole restored Rye’s two-goal cushion with a terrific strike. The hosts nabbed a consolation right at the end following a sloppy back pass by Luke Woodley.

Elsewhere last night, Westfield reserves won 5-4 on penalties away to Peasmarsh & Iden in a Robertsbridge Charity Cup semi-final. The tie had finished 1-1 after extra-time.
