Pogue double puts United through

Sean Ray got off to a winning start as Hastings United player/manager today (Saturday).

Two goals from Kenny Pogue gave United a 2-1 victory at home to Tooting & Mitcham United in round three of the Ryman League Cup.

Hastings went into the game one point and one place above their opponents in the Premier Division table and they had the edge on the pitch on a grey afternoon.

Pogue put them ahead bang on four minutes with a near post header from Jack Dixon’s cross and United looked comfortable until Andre McCollin levelled in the 37th minute with a low drive from 25 yards.

Neither goalkeeper was really tested in the second half until United grabbed a 72nd minute winner. The lively Jordan Woodley delivered a terrific cross from the right which Pogue swept home on the volley from close range.

United goalkeeper Matt Armstrong-Ford had one save to make from a header at a corner, but on the whole the hosts didn’t look in any real danger, and Pogue and Woodley had efforts saved deep into added time.

United (4-3-3): Armstrong-Ford; Dixon, Ray, Jirbandey, Sutton; Crellin, Thomson (Ellis 80), Carey; Woodley, Pogue, Attwood. Subs not used: Manning, Bolwell, Elgar, Anderson.
