Rye push Bognor all the way

Rye United pushed higher grade Bognor Regis Town all the way last night (Wednesday).

The Quarterboys eventually lost 3-1, but there was little between the sides in a well-contested Sussex Senior Cup second round tie.

Bognor, who are third in Ryman Division One South, went in front after 10 minutes when Terry Dodd laid the ball square for Jason Prior to rifle into the net.

Matt Maclean failed to convert a glorious chance to equalise in the 23rd minute and Bognor doubled their lead two minutes later through Prior’s header from a corner.

Rye, second in Sussex County League Division One, pulled one back in the 44th minute when Wes Tate rounded the goalkeeper after latching onto Maclean’s ball.

The hosts pushed forward during the closing quarter, but were caught on the break in the 86th minute. Kane Wills slotted home as the flag stayed down.

Although there was still time for Allan McMinigal to head against Bognor’s crossbar, it was the Rocks who went through to a last 16 clash against Burgess Hill Town.

A full report and reaction will appear in tomorrow’s Rye Observer.
