Wins for Westfield & Common

The area’s Sussex County Football League Division Two clubs all avoided defeat on Saturday.

Westfield won 3-2 at home to Wick and Bexhill United drew 2-2 at home to Storrington in the league, while Little Common triumphed 5-1 at home to Steyning Town in round one of the Sussex RUR Charity Cup.

Gordon Cuddington gave Westfield a fifth minute lead with a tremendous lob from wide on the right moments after Nathan Russell had headed against a post. Jethro Warren doubled their advantage with a penalty.

Although Wick pulled one back before half time, a cracking strike by recent signing Danny Woodley restored Westfield’s two-goal cushion. Wick again got within one, but Westfield held on to move up to fourth.

Bexhill went behind against bottom half outfit Storrington only for Martin Denny to level at half time. Steve Morris put third-placed Bexhill ahead with time running out, but Storrington nabbed a deserved point.

Division Two leaders Common made it six straight wins in all competitions by cruising past league rivals Steyning. Jamie Crone gave Common a half time lead and Lewis Hole made it 2-0 early in the second period.

Steyning pulled one back, but Anthony Cooper restored Common’s two-goal advantage. Late strikes from Crone - his 11th of the season already - and Hole gave the scoreline a more resounding look.
