Former Sussex racehorse trainer dies

He began training at Peacehaven in 1956 and moved to Findon shortly afterwards before purchasing Startside Stables in Epsom in 1959, where he remained until he retired in 1974.

His first notable victory was with Plummer's Plain in the 1960 Whitbread Gold Cup for owner Fred Clay.

The following year he won the Chester Cup with Hoy, while Invader won the Imperial Cup victories in 1964. and Spy Net landed the same race eight years later.

In 1961, on the advice of bloodstock agent Jack Doyle, he tand two years later he won the Cheltenham Gold Cup when trained by Fulke Walwyn. Gollings had a long-standing bet on the race which won him 10,000 and 2,000 for Syd Dale.

Syd Dale also trained talented hurdler Black Justice, who finished third behind Persian War in the 1968 Champion Hurdle when ridden by Brough Scott.
