Gwen cracks record after 13-year break

Thirteen years after retiring from athletics Gwen Bird from Lewes turned up for the Sussex Masters Championships at Brighton's Withdean Stadium and won the over-45 title with a fine throw of 36.66m, also setting a championship record.

This effort was some ten metres better than the previous championship record and also broke the national over-50 discus record by more than metre.

Bird, who originally hails from Norfolk, moved to Sussex five years ago and this was her first competition since her retirement.

'I felt I was throwing technically well from my first throw,' said Bird, 'and I will now be looking for other competitions as I am sure I can improve on this effort.'
