H&B gunning for shock victory

Hastings & Bexhill are gearing up for their last chance before Christmas to beat a side above them.

While the rugby club has defeated the five bottom six teams it has faced so far, H&B are yet to record a victory against any of the top five in Kent One ahead of the trip to Dartfordians tomorrow (Saturday).

Head coach Kevin Smith, pictured, said: “On our day we can beat any squad, even the ones above us. It’s going to come, there’s going to be an upset and hopefully it will be on Saturday.”

Second-placed Dartfordians possess an identical record to leaders Gillingham with 10 wins and 46 points from their 11 matches so far. They’ve scored more points than any other team, but no-one in the top eight has conceded more.

“If we can beat Dartfordians, as far as I’m concerned, that would send shockwaves right the way through the league,” continued Smith. “But we must really, really perform because it’s going to be a tough one.”

Sixth-placed H&B, who have won five and lost five so far, will make the journey up the A21 refreshed and raring to go after a free week last weekend, and buoyed by their 49-18 win over bottom club New Ash Green a fortnight ago.

Elsewhere tomorrow, Rye will entertain Sussex One leaders Pulborough. Kick-off at New Road is 2.15pm. See today’s Observers for full previews on both clubs.
