Newman sinks United

UNITED'S cup adventure came to an end at Maidenhead on Saturday '” but only after they gave their Southern League opponents a mighty scare.

Down 2-0 at half-time, United pulled a goal back within seconds of the restart and caused anxious moments in Maidenhead's defence before man of the match, Lee Newman, who started the season with Worthing, settled it.

Despite being roared on by a vocal travelling support, United suffered a double blow in the opening 10 minutes.

Geddes headed a difficult opportunity wide for United midway through the half, then Magpies' striker Craig O'Connor had an effort tipped onto the bar and over by United keeper Sam Figg.

Maidenhead keeper Francisco Ramos brilliantly saved Colin Moss' 20-yard volley but disaster came for United seven minutes before the break. Newman twisted and turned, and was brought down in the box by Moss. United were unhappy it but O'Connor blasted the penalty home.
