SHOOTING-HORSHAM'S BALL WINS QUEEN'S BRONZE BADGE

MIKE Ball of Horsham Rifle Club was one of many Sussex shooters competing in the National Rifle Association's Imperial Meeting at Bisley last week.

Drenched by the rains that hammered down he recorded a notable triumph for the county by winning the first stage of HM The Queen's Prize. Awarded by Queen Victoria in 1860, the prize is shot in three knockout stages.

In the first, the competitors fire seven shots to count at 300, 500 and 600 yards to decide the 300 who will continue into the second stage.

On a day of blustery winds and occasional torrential rain Ball scored a maximim 105 points with 18 central bullseyes in his 21 shots, just one more central than his namesake Nigel Ball of the Stock Exchange Rifle Club, to take the NRA Bronze Medal and embroidered Bronze Badge at the head of the 1300 firers who started the competition.

Jane Messer of Hailsham was the next highest Sussex shooter with 104.12, in 44th place.
