TORRANCE ON DEBUT FOR DARREN

WORTHING Golf Club's England Under-16s debut-making 14-year-old Darren Renwick not only found himself being watched by the previous Ryder Cup captain. He was drawn to play twice against his son.

Sam Torrance watched Renwick pair with Matthew Cullanan, 15, of Woburn to defeat Daniel Torrance, 15, and Cameron Gray, 16, in the morning foursomes when England took on Scotland at Woodhall Spa.

Renwick and Cullanan won 2&1 by taking their chances when Gray's game faltered over the last four holes. In the afternoon singles, Renwick then faced Torrance Jnr, was two up at the turn but lost 3&1 at the 17th when Torrance, in the heavy rain that fell during the last four holes, sank his second shot for eagle.

Renwick's calm temperament enabled him to produce steady golf which brought he and Cullanan back from losing their opening two holes on the tough Woodhall Spa course in Lincolnshire, noted for its length, heather cover and deep bunkers.

Facing Daniel Torrance, who plays out of Sunningdale and reportedly plays in a number of events where his father participates, Renwick went one down by bogeying the third but at the turn was one under par.

Torrance, maybe 60 yards longer than Renwick off the tee escaped well some tree trouble on the front nine then opened up against the wind, played superbly back in.

England won 11-4, choosing eight Under-16s, plus Cullanan and Renwick, to Scotland's nine Under-16s, and an Under-14 a month younger than Renwick who lost twice. England Boys, including Renwick, meet England Girls at Piltdown on Sunday.
