What a weekend for Slaughter!

EVERGREEN athlete Brian Slaughter had a weekend to savour at the 33rd British Masters Track and Field Championships at Derby - the top domestic event for veteran athletes.

A decathlete by trade, Slaughter competed in a batch of individual events but still emerged with great credit among a field of specialists.

The 400m was billed as one of the events of the weekend. It contained the reigning world champion Howard Moscrop, the reigning European champion and the reigning British champion. On paper the Bexhill star was expected to finish sixth, but a barnstorming final 200m saw him home fourth with 62.85 - his fastest for two years and a new county M45 record.

Slaughter then went straight over to the discus to throw a season's best for the bronze medal. One hour later it was the javelin where he went one better with the silver. He led a tight long jump competition after the third round with 5.74, however his 400m heat was due meaning he was unable to jump any more and ended up having to settle for the bronze.

Slaughter qualified for the 400m final to be held later in the day, with another high class field. Despite not finishing in the medals Slaughter was delighted at recording a season's best time.

He is now preparing for the World Championships in Puerto Rico at the beginning of July where he will be a medal contender for his strongest event - the decathlon.
