New Venture Theatre’s production of Taking Care of Baby runs in Brighton from January 19-27 (running time: 145 minutes including interval).

Spokesman Ayshen Irfan said: “Dennis Kelly's emotive play delves into the profound consequences following the tragic deaths of two children from Sudden Infant Mortality Syndrome (SIDS). The narrative revolves around Donna McAuliffe, the mother of the children, who is wrongfully imprisoned under the suspicion of their murder. Her disgraced politician mother fights to keep her and her daughter's heads above water as she deals with the fall-out of her reputation and flailing sense of motherhood. Donna's mother tirelessly advocates for her release, asserting that she suffers from a recently discovered condition known as Leeman-Keatley syndrome, a divisive diagnosis. Donna eventually regains her freedom and endeavours to rebuild her life, while her mother embarks on a political journey, rekindling her own career by running as an independent candidate in local elections. Meanwhile, Donna's estranged husband, Martin, confronts the author of Taking Care of Baby, expressing his concern that the play may exploit the greatest tragedy of his life for entertainment purposes.”

Neil Hadley, from the company, said: “I first encountered this play when helping a student select an appropriate monologue for a drama school audition. She had left it very late to choose one and I was hoping that a solution would present itself. I hope it did the trick.”
